Weighing in Is Important For Weight Loss – But When Should you Avoid the Scale?

As you likely already know, it is important to weigh yourself on a regular basis in order to maintain a steady weight loss. For some, this means weighing in daily. For others, once a week is enough to allow for
adjustments when necessary without dealing with the daily weight fluctuations that will naturally show on the scale. But is there ever a time that you should completely avoid the scale? Some believe that avoiding the scale is always a bad idea, and that facing any damage a mistake
in diet may have caused is the best way to stay on track. However, there may be some cases where stepping on a scale can do more harm than good. Read on to learn just a few times that it might be better to forgo the regular
weigh-in.

The Day After Thanksgiving (or any food-centered holiday)
Thanksgiving is just one of the many national holidays that involves binging on foods that are rarely offered. The entire day is actually centered around food. Even the most strict dieter might slip up on this day, and it doesn’t mean it will ruin all your hard work and effort throughout the year. Instead, it will simply cause a short delay in weight loss progress. If you are one of many that tosses your daily diet plan out the window on this or another holiday, don’t torture yourself by stepping on the scale the next day. Instead, you can get back on track the day after the holiday ends and begin eating on your regular healthy schedule and then weigh in again a few days later. If you know you will remedy any damage you have done, what’s the point in seeing a temporarily higher number on the scale?
If You Have Been Lifting Weights
As William, one of our ThinSlim Foods followers, points out – if you have been lifting weights, the scale may not show a lower number the way you want. Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you have begun gaining
muscle and burning off fat, the scale may temporarily rise, even if your clothes are fitting more loosely or you are seeing other positive
changes. If you step on the scale during this time, it may cause you to
switch your workouts and stop lifting weights – but studies have shown
that building lean muscle mass offers many benefits, including raising
metabolism, creating endurance, building bone strength, and much more.
As long as your clothes aren’t beginning to fit tighter than before,
it’s often better to avoid stepping on a scale for a while during weight
training.
When You Feel Suddenly Great About Your Body
We’ve all been there – had that magic moment where you just felt
thinner than the day before. Maybe it was after you got a good workout
in, maybe you skipped dessert the night before – whatever the reason, you
feel literally thinner than the day before. And even when you look in
the mirror, you see a whole new you when compared to previous days. Then
you step on the scale. And the number is exactly the same or even higher than it was yesterday when you felt uncomfortable with your body. And your entire mood diminishes, you no longer see success in the mirror, and suddenly feel as if your clothes got tighter within minutes.

When this happens, it usually has a ripple effect in a negative way – your mood may plummet dramatically, and you will feel disappointed in yourself, making it harder to make good decisions regarding food and exercise. Instead, on those mornings where you magically feel ten pounds lighter and feel great about yourself, avoid the scale completely. Take that great feeling of confidence and carry it with you all day, making good food choices and sticking with your plan (because you know it’s working, even without stepping on a scale). You can weigh in the next day, when your mood will likely start out differently, and you won’t anticipate a magical weight loss. Then, if you have lost even an ounce, it will boost your mood and allow you to have the same confidence you had the day before.
