As I mentioned in a Facebook post earlier, I saw an article this week in which the title made it sound as if it would include tips for busy moms to fit exercise into their schedules. I clicked on the link, and what I saw was a list of tips for general workouts, including the very basic “remember to wear sunblock while working out.” The entire list was this vague, and I think only one of the tips actually involved children or busy moms. So, I have compiled a short list of some tips for those busy moms out there who, like me, have a hard time fitting workouts into their busy schedules.
- Incorporate the kids – Exercises with baby, walking with a stroller, or dancing with older children are all great ways to get exercise without interrupting playtime with your child.
- Coach a sport – If you have older children that play sports, offer to be a coach or assistant. You can get out there with the kids and run around, burning calories and having fun at the same time.
- Take advantage of naptime – The dishes, or the phone calls, or whatever you have planned for naptime can wait ten or even thirty minutes while you squeeze in a quick workout.
- Alternate with another mom – Rotate hosting play dates so the non-hosting mom can get in a workout. Every few days is better than no days at all when it comes to exercise.
- Join a gym with a daycare – if affordability is an issue, most YMCA locations are based on income, and yet they offer free daycare. This allows busy moms to get a break and get their workouts in while the kids have fun too.
While there will always be days that you just can’t fit working out into your busy schedule, by incorporating some of the tips above, you will be able to find opportunities where you might not have otherwise.
