Studies have shown that the Ketogenic Diet (KD) and the Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) are effective in treating some cases of intractable epilepsy in children and adults. The KD is a very high fat, low carb, moderate protein diet that has had documented success over the past ten years in decreasing daily seizures in people with intractable epilepsy. The MAD is a similar diet. The Baltimore-based Ketogenic Diet Center and Adult Epilepsy Diet Center helps to monitor and treat patients with epilepsy on a KD diet. When starting children on the diet, typically a two to three-day hospital stay is required.
