Recent findings are indicating that adhering to a low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet is beneficial in reducing weight and maintaining a good working metabolic rate. On this type of diet, carbohydrates are limited to a small percentage of the daily diet. This, along with regular exercise, has been shown to reduce weight in individuals participating in a recent independent research project. One of the groups in the project ate a diet of 77% fat, 17% protein and 6% carbs. The other group ate a diet consisting of 20% fat, 14% protein and 65% carbohydrates. After twelve weeks, the participants that ate the low carbohydrate diet saw a significant decrease in weight and body mass than the group that ate the high carbohydrate diet.
Key Takeaways:
- Ketogenic diets have advantages in metabolic processing that assist with managing weight and blood sugar levels.
- In a recent study, a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet resulted in significantly more weight loss versus a high carbohydrate diet.
- Ketogenic diets focus on shifting the body’s main source of energy from glucose to ketone bodies.
“New evidence suggests that, in well-trained individuals, a very low carb, ketogenic diet can increase fat burning as well as reduce body weight.”
