Six Simple Tips for Eating Slowly

It is often said that one of the main reasons it is difficult to lose weight is eating too fast, leading you to not recognize when you are full and ultimately overeat. There are many different ways you can approach this hurdle and slow yourself down when eating. Read on for a few simple tips that can help you slow down – use one or all of them:

Set your utensil down between each bite – By taking the time to set down your fork or spoon, you force yourself to slow down while eating your meal.

Drink an entire bottle of water during the meal – Whether you drink out of a water bottle or a glass with meals, set the goal of drinking 20 ounces of water by the time you finish eating the meal. By doing this, you will slow down your eating and feel full faster. The extra water not only helps weight loss by causing you to eat less, but it also aids in digestion of the food.

Watch others around you – If you are serving yourself smaller portions or eating on a small plate, it is easy to eat the food quickly and be done faster than others who have more food on their plate. If you watch others around you and time yourself to not be finished before them, despite your smaller portions, it will force you to slow down while eating.

Focus on the food – Don’t mindlessly nosh while eating television or doing some other activity. By doing this, you are focused on something else and will eat more quickly than you should. When you are done with your meal, you may feel as though you didn’t eat much because you didn’t really get to taste it. This can not only cause you to eat too quickly, but can also lead to second helpings, and this can be very detrimental to weight loss.

Eat with your non-dominant hand – If you are right handed, eat all meals with your left hand. It forces you to slow down while eating, and can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Eat with chopsticks – Even if you are very skilled at eating with chopsticks, they can only hold so much food in each bite. For many people, not only does it lead to smaller bites taken, but it also slows down the time between each bite.
