Consider Requirements for Burning Off Foods Before Eating

When cravings hit, or a favorite food is offered, it can sometimes seem almost impossible to resist temptation. One key to doing so is to develop a change in thinking. If you factor in the amount of calories a food item has, and consider the amount of exercise necessary to reverse the damage done by that food, it can often lead to better decision-making about what we eat.

One quick example is an iced coffee or latte at many leading coffee houses and fast food restaurants. These can contain up to 1,000 calories in just one cup. That takes a lot of exercise to burn off – for many of us it would mean over two hours of rigorous exercise. In Drink This, Not That, it gives an example of what it equals in exercise – pushing a push lawn mower from one field zone to the other on a football field 124 times! That’s a lot of work for one drink. By being knowledgeable about the calories in the foods you consume, and understanding how much work it will take to burn those calories off and prevent them from turning into fat, you may be able to better resist temptation.
